Summer of 2007

I once thought that the most awkward memory I had was anything that had to do with my first love. I didn’t even want to think about that time despite having vivid flashbacks. It turns out this will be all that was left for me to think about.

I was 11 in the summer of 2007. He was 14 and he lived next door. He was fair, tall, and cute. He scribbled something on a piece of paper, gave it to me, and he started running. It turns out he’s cowardly asking me out. He would finish the chores early so he could see me. On some days I would see him smiling while writing something on a whole piece sheet of paper. He would then insert the paper into the hole in the wall that connects to our house. It turns out to be a love letter that I would read over and over until it saturates me. We would meet at our friend’s house and talk for hours on end. He would hold my hand and stare at me for a long time. I would randomly receive a message on my phone from an email with strings of I Love Yous. On some days he would clap his hands so I would know he was outside. On the days that they moved to another place and I was sulking in my room, I would hear the familiar clap only to find him outside in his beige shirt, khaki pants, and clean-cut haircut.

He would walk miles from where they lived just to see me, and he would walk back to their home because he had to study. He couldn’t care less about the tiredness and distance because he wanted to see me, his first love.

One day, he decided to courageously face my father. He spent the evening in our home being sermoned at. I would be sitting upstairs, angry and humiliated, just because I wanted to keep us a secret. He eventually became my father’s ultimate favorite and they would spend hours hanging out.

Then I told him I didn’t want to see him anymore. We didn’t get to end things up. He cried that day. I never saw him then.

Seventeen years later, he passed away.

Memories came rushing all at once that it was so hard for me to keep up. I was his first love and the first to break his heart. He was a good person, so innocent and pure. My heart was shattered when I learned that while I was living the years of my youth, he spent 17 years checking out on me secretly. I could have said I was sorry for breaking his heart all the while he remained faithful but all I did is brush him off my memory. All those years he never stopped thinking about me. I was confident that he would live his life fruitfully, but I didn’t know it would only be 31 fruitful years.

All that was left of me were the memories of the summer of 2007 and 17 years’ worth of sighs, longings, and regrets.

I left him crying that day but he didn’t know that when it was time for him to leave, I would be the one to cry the hardest.

AT LEAST HE IS A CHRISTIAN

I knew I grew up when I wanted to bury my face out of shame every time I look back and remember my gold standard – any guy will do as long as he is a Christian.

So there’s this guy I met when I was 19 and he is a Christian, or so I thought. Plain, straight, and simple he is my type and I went gaga over him. He invited me to services on Sundays and given the thought that we have a mutual understanding, I go for the sake of seeing him. My heart melted when I saw him leading the service, jumping to the music, shouting his praises, and I thought maybe he was the one for me.

We didn’t end up together.

I was in a terrible state because I thought I’d never find someone like him again. I prayed about ending up with any guy as long as he’s a Christian thinking this would satisfy my wanting of a godly relationship. Then six years later, I was committed to a Pastor.

The waiting process was painful because my standard was compromised. During that time I learned what a true Christian guy is.

He isn’t someone who leads the service, jumps to the music, shouts his praises, and sends confusion to a woman. His life’s barometer isn’t only what he shows in the church or posts on social media. He is not only committed in the ministry but also His intimacy with God.

He is willing to be discipled so he can lead. He is more than a hearer of the Word, but a doer of the Word.

My standard over the years was realigned when I was finally discipled and led. It’s easy to find a Christian guy, but a man who understands his purpose and brings you closer to God and not to sin is always worth the wait.

A Letter To The Soldier I Love

I knew the week I met you that you were the one.

The night we first talked over the phone and you were trying different positions to fix a weak signal, I knew you were the one. The day you sent me a picture of you in your flight suit while asking me to wait for you until you were back, I knew you were the one. The night you told me you had not felt this way in three years, I knew you were the one.

When you told me on Christmas Eve we’ll be together on the next, I knew you were the one. When you calculated our offspring’s blood type using Punnett square and you presented the percentage of each possible blood type, I knew you were the one. The night at the airport when you were waiting for me, it was the first time I saw you. I don’t mean to exaggerate but I feel the world slows down, my knees are trembling, and right then and there I knew you were the one.

The day we were singing Siakol in the car while we were on a road trip and you were pointing to historical sites – blabbering the dates in history – I knew you were the one. The time you kissed me while you were fixing the helmet, I knew you were the one. The morning I woke up to your kiss on my forehead while I was pretending to be asleep so I could get more, I knew you were the one.  The night when we were sharing pillows and cold feet and you told me your deepest secrets, I knew you were the one.

It was when I gave you the chance to hurt me and hoped you wouldn’t do it, it was when you let me sleep while you cook my favorite dish, it was when you brought me to places you never thought touched me so deeply, it was on that night when we lose our innocence and I ended up wanting the pleasure of losing it again, I knew you were the one.

I knew you were the one when deep down I realized I’d rather be real with you than fairytale with anybody else.

To the Right Guy I Loved At The Wrong Time

“We’ll rebuild these hopes and feelings soon,” you said. You said those words easily as if I know when you’ll come around and come back for me.

Before you even said on that phone call that I shouldn’t cry, actually I already did. I was thinking how foolish of me to even have my very own reasons why we couldn’t be together at the time we wanted us to be, crazy reasons that this waiting would make a very good foundation in our relationship. I even convinced myself that you’re probably not ready yet, that somehow true love really waits. I tried to understand that this waiting will make our relationship worth it. And worse, I tried to make myself believe that it’s better that we have “something” instead of “nothing”.

As soon as you finally told me it was not the right time yet, I realized it didn’t matter who said it first or who said it. You explained as though you practiced everything you were about to say – hesitating, breathing, and pausing in between lines. For the minutest second, I was listening to the voice of the boy I once knew, the boy I loved, the voice of the guy I would rather hear than my favorite song, the voice I heard on the phone saying I have to get out of the house and look at the stars only to find him standing there, the voice I’m agitating to hear from a morning call and last one I want to hear before going to sleep. And then it was gone, it was goodbye. And as I look back at how you left me before, I realize it is happening right now, again, for the same reason, the same lines, that’s when I started crying.

I was blinded, I guess, by the way you make me feel this is worth waiting for. It’s how you put beautiful words together, or how I foolishly let you come back and let you leave me again for some reason you told me before. It’s about how I melted when you told me you already fell for me. It’s about how I let you silence the loud doubts in my head. Now I don’t know how to put everything where it used to be and forget you.

Maybe one day we’ll be right for each other and it won’t be so hard for you to love me. Maybe one day we’ll meet again when you’re ready and I’m not in a hurry. But that day isn’t today. Today you’re not into commitment and I am too pushy. Today even if we work out and as much as I want us, I can’t keep pretending that time is into us.

So please don’t have the audacity to say we’ll be waiting for each other for that “right time” and that time will make us wonderfully perfect for each other. I don’t know when I can possibly endure waiting for you to come back and rebuild the love we once made. We will never be enough for each other. We will never be better for each other. You were a lesson but I confused you for a soulmate.

One thing I learned from the end of my life as I knew it: Tonight is the first and the longest time I cried.

To You My Love, Who’s About To Be Married

image

It is a silent heartbreak for my heart no longer grieves. As I stared at your proposal, my mind could not help but think. A couple of years ago you promised to wait for me. I didn’t think I’d swoon on your words until now when your heart no longer yearns for me.

My hands are trembling as I am writing this to you. I never thought I’d write to you again after a year or two. Anger comes with bitterness as I remember what you did to me. Everyone would think I’m a fool for being friend-zoned for the fifth time. Aye, me.

You left for another country, I was more than devastated. It seems like you’ve made up your mind for I can see the plane has already departed. My heart, oh I don’t exactly know how to put it into words. My heart bade goodbye to someone who was never mine, by far it’s the worst.

So I will ignore every inch of my being that screams I miss you until I can find someone tall, handsome, skinny, and vain- and Daniel is not the name.

So I say goodbye to all the piggyback rides and the study outs and the love notes in my books and the midnight walks and the daydreamt blue Jeep and the son named Kayler. You had broken my heart to fulfill it to someone who you think was better.

To the Christian Guy Who Broke My Heart

This is me, finally accepting my defeat that no matter what I do, I am not on your league.

We are not only seeing each other. In fact we are not walking between the line. We were given the time. We were able to hold each other. You were able to pull me closer through my waist. I know all your jokes, your favorite songs, and your scent. That’s why it was hard when I decided to forget you because it also means forgetting the familiarity of the places we’ve gone, even the sound of your ring tone.

Even so, I want to thank you for pushing that we are always wrong for each other. Because of you, I learned what a true man is – he isn’t someone who gives signals only to be never heard again, leaving strings of excuses that it isn’t the right time yet. He isn’t someone who comes back when someone is taking his place. He isn’t someone who breaks hearts and pretend he’s up to waiting.

And as I look at your new messages asking me out again, while a part of me still thinks that we can make it official in the right time, I am also thinking that this distance between us is the exact closure I needed to get over this and get over you. And it’s also possible that a Christian guy like you – so perfect and devoted, could break hearts too.

A Letter to the One Who Will Pursue Me

LittleMissIncredible's avatarlittlemissincredible

I don’t want you to pursue me just because you are lonely. Find your happiness in being alone confidently knowing that at the right time I would surely come along. I want you to pursue me when you are ready and you are not in a hurry. I know there will be tiring and lonely nights but I want you to keep in mind that I exist and I am worth the wait.

I don’t want you to pursue me when you are recently dealing from a devastated relationship. I don’t want to hear dramas on how your ex broke your heart and how you were played. Sure, it’s nice to heal someone else’s heart, but I don’t want to be the one who will do it. I don’t want to be the one who will do the fixing. I want you to pursue me when you’re already whole and…

A Letter to my Future Husband

Are-You-Dating-A-Godly-Woman.jpg

I don’t know if we met already. I don’t even know if we already passed each other’s ways. I am writing to you because I want you to know that I am wondering if I ever crossed your mind or have any idea about me. Either way, as early as now, I am waiting for you and I always am.

I hope you’re doing fine; I know you are. I’m pretty sure you are handsome and I believe you are wonderfully made, designed to withstand trials, a clear proof you are a child of God. You are a believer and a servant of Christ; I know because I prayed for you all along. With that, I am becoming more excited about spiritually walking together with you.

I wonder what you are doing right now. You’re probably be sleeping at this very moment or preoccupied with your home works. I wonder…

To the One-Sided Love I Once Had

LittleMissIncredible's avatarlittlemissincredible

image“It would be perfect,” I thought if only it happened sometime in the future when he’s no longer a coward and I am not desperate.

You are not really mine to begin with and you never have plans either. How foolish of me to be so devastated by that no strings attached situation with you. It will always be a hard and painful thing to deal that even though I was left so many times and so easily, I don’t have the courage to rant because a friend doesn’t rant. And I was a friend.

I knew all along you are not the type who believe in labels. I was thinking maybe you were right, that a label is only a plain formality, that it really doesn’t matter if you go on dating without knowing what you are up for. It was okay then because I thought it’s where we’ll…
